SPRING

SUNGLASS

GUIDE

We spoke with Kristin Kunkel, Sales Director of Specialty Stores for luxury eyewear designer (and one of our personal faves) Oliver Peoples. She gave us the lowdown on which shade styles are in this spring.

What are some of the must-try sunglass trends for spring?

- Cat Eye. This shape is a standout trend in sunglasses for spring. The Oliver Peoples “Mande” style is so chic and timeless, and the matte black color gives it an extra edge.

- Mixed-media. This trend combines different types of materials. The unisex Oliver Peoples “Braverman” style has a classic shape from the front, and great metal temple detail from the side.

- Bi-gradient colored frames. This trend allows you to play with color in a wearable way. It’s also very flattering against all skin tones. The Oliver Peoples “Corie” frame in red Havana/rose gradient is your best bet. And it even has gradient polarized lenses.

- Vintage-inspired, washed lenses. This unisex trend is reminiscent of every Spring/Summer 2012 runway show.  Pastels are this spring’s neon. These colors are so flattering and beautiful and are perfect with jeans and a t-shirt or a flirty dress. The Oliver Peoples “Gregory Peck” frame with vintage-inspired rosa lens is your winner.

What are the three essential styles every woman should have in her sunglass wardrobe?

A classic aviator that is both sporty and chic like the “Benedict” style. An oversized Wayfarer that’s both edgy and classic like the “Daddy B.” A glamorous oversized pair that is fabulous and stylish like the titanium “Daisy” style.

Are there any hard and fast rules for picking a frame?

We advise that you avoid frames that mimic your face shape. For example, if you have a very round face, you might want to stay away from circular styles. Same goes for a square shape – try something with softer curves that will provide balance.  Also, good lenses make such a difference. Our lenses have multiple coatings to prevent glare and repel dust, water, oil and fingerprints, whether the lens is polarized (reflects glare), photochromic (light transition lens), or mineral glass. Fit is also extremely important. The sunglasses should fit straight on the top of the bridge of your nose.

IF YOU COULD BUY JUST ONE PIECE

The Cambridge Satchel is the perfect bag to carry you through spring and summer. The leather satchels are handmade in Britain and are available in an array of bright hues (as well as more subdued "classic" colors). The sleek design includes front buckle fastenings, an adjustable strap and front pocket. For a small extra charge you can personalize your bag through the company's embossing service. We love the 11-inch Fluro Yellow version pictured, but there are numerous color combos and size options worth checking out.
