JEWELRY TO LOVE RIGHT NOW

Dana Colby has the best eye for jewelry. Aside from being blessed with style, she can edit down the pieces you need like nobody else. Her rare ability to spot jewelry tailored to her client’s fashion style never ceases to amaze us. With Valentine’s Day approaching, we asked her for advice on jewelry to give to others or gift for yourself.

Best Valentine's Day gift: I absolutely love a pair of bold statement earrings—the more colorful the better. It’s something most women wouldn’t get for themselves. My current obsession: Andrea Fohrman’s Lapis Drop Earrings, which feature an unexpected halo of diamonds and blue sapphires surrounding a lapis, turquoise and opal. There is no way you won’t get stopped on the street with these earrings. Online at marissacollections.com.

The one thing you didn’t know you needed but now can’t live without: I’m loving mix-and-match studs. It’s such a change from your typical matching studs. If you have more than one piercing in your ear, you can get super creative and wear several single studs going up your ear. Online at twistonline.com.

If someone were to invest in one big ticket piece right now:  I love the idea of a cocktail ring gift. I have seen a big return of cocktail rings—especially when paired with delicate rings. I like cocktail rings worn on the middle finger and especially love when they are worn on the pointer finger. Andrea Fohrman’s Australian opal is encased with a trim of Red Spinel, an exquisite style that's truly a family heirloom in the making. Online at twistonline.com.

Best custom piece of jewelry: Maya Brenner’s asymmetrical letter necklaces are a great price point and make such a great gift for moms and wives. You can personalize the necklaces to have one letter or several letters that correspond with the names of children, husbands or anyone special. Or you can layer the necklaces and have one letter on each for each special person in your life. I love that! I want to wear 3 of them at a time! Online at mayabrenner.com

HEAD TO TOE WORK LOOK

A black turtleneck is a perfect blank canvas for winterizing any outfit. This week, wear one underneath a sleeveless dress.

Turtlenecks are back this season. The thin, black turtleneck sweater, in our opinion, has never gone away. Wearing one under a sleeveless dress is a new, cool way to incorporate one into your wardrobe. Not to mention, it’s a great way to keep warm in a non-bulky way. Continue adding slim, insulating layers with matte opaque tights and over-the-knee boots. This suede pair by Jimmy Choo looks elegant and work-appropriate when worn with tights and a classic drop-waist dress. A structured bag and set of rings with a raw, naturalistic vibe round out the look. Don’t forget a warm winter coat. For work, we love a classic camel belted style that can be worn for years to come. If this Carven style (on sale!) is still too pricey, try a similar version like this one by Theyskens’ Theory.

HEAD TO TOE DAY-NIGHT

Sadly, the 40 degree temperature is worth getting excited about. So, this week it’s all about piling on layer after layer.

When it comes to casual cool, the checked button-up shirt is your go-to. The chic-grunge pattern takes on a contemporary-cool look when you wear with black and white. With lots of choices ranging from Steven Alan to Isabel Marant to Thomas Mason for J.Crew to Uniqlo, finding one isn’t that hard. Perfect for transeasonal looks, wear it underneath a warm black cardigan with black skinny jeans (Right now we’re all about this J Brand cropped version with a worn finish, but also love this more weather-appropriate pair by Mother.) We love how this shirt looks peeping out underneath an oversized black cashmere sweater as well. To keep the look sophisticated, wear with studded booties. Just be sure to wear black socks to avoid exposing your skin to the cold. Finish the look with a warm coat like this one from Canada Goose. As for accessories, a nice turban, cool sunnies , a backpack, and rainbow and lightning bolt stud earrings are just the thing to keep things fun.
