IF YOU COULD ONLY BUY JUST ONE PIECE

Maybe it's due to the recent terrible weather we've been having? Maybe it’s been brought on by the resurgence of ‘90s style? Or maybe, we're just plain obsessed because they are so damn cool? In any case, we're coveting Dr. Martens. This cult-classic has been stealthily re-appearing on the feet of fashionable girls to combat the snow and rain. For those of us old enough to remember our first pair back in high school, this time around we recommend skipping the yellow stitching. Instead, check out the Chanel-esque Coralie Quilted 8-Eye Boot version. Admittedly, we were timid at first. But after wearing these every day last week, we can attest that you can, in fact, wear them and look surprisingly age-appropriate. Especially, when paired with sweaters and leggings, skinny jeans and blouses, and even mini-skirts and turtleneck sweaters. The best part? They’re surprisingly flattering (due to their thick soles) and add a fashionable twist to any outfit. In short, you don’t have to be some young, edgy blogger to pull this look off—at all! (We even got a pair of baby Docs for our 2-year-old!) Now, hope for more bad weather as an excuse to get a pair.

HEAD TO TOE LONG WEEKEND

Follow Courtney Love’s and Hedi Slimane’s lead: rock quilted Dr. Martens with a mini dress.

This girly-tough combo is inherently, effortless cool. Reformation’s Viola dress is a perfect pick with its fit-and-flare cut and dipped V at the back of the neck. The high neckline and long sleeves, however, keep the short, flirty length in check. To keep the outfit from looking too retro, pair with sophisticated and current pieces. A shearling biker jacket adds a luxe touch, as do oversized tortoise frames and a no-nonsense black leather bucket bag. A chunky, red wool beanie adds a fun pop-of-color and pulls all the elements of the look together. Add black wool tights, and you are set for all (or, at least most) of the possible weather conditions we New Yorkers have been experiencing over the past few weeks.

HEAD TO TOE  V-DAY DATE

Look hot (and stay warm-ish) in a black jumpsuit.

We’re New Yorkers and we wear black (to match our black hearts. Ha) even on V-day. A fitted black jumpsuit is a cool alternative to a dress, skirt or jeans. We love the polka-dotted illusion neckline of this style by Mango. It’s also the perfect canvas to showcase interesting jewelry. Pearls, traditionally, can feel old-fashioned or preppy. That’s why we love the ultra modern, even punk-y vibe of these pearl pieces—they are anything but stodgy. Sophie Bille Brahe’s oversized ‘Lisa Grande’ pearl ring is elegant and super chic. It’s even more amazing when layered with her ‘Lisa Petite’ knuckle ring. Anthropologie’s double pearl choker looks like a million bucks, and people will demand to know where you got it. Complete your jeweled adornment with a funky ear cuff like this Maria Black version. Jumpsuits look best paired with a pump, preferably a streamlined pair with a pointed toe. Platform heels or flats can look, well, wrong. A heeled ankle boot is an acceptable second choice, especially if they expose some ankle.
