FITNESS Q & A:   LAURA KOVALL OF   THE FIT CO.

Laura2

WHERE TO BUY

The Fitco. NYC, 39 West 56th St., b/t Fifth & Sixth Aves., 4th flr. (917-685-8032). Online at thefitco.nyc.

A native New Yorker, Laura has always wanted to do it all. Since her high school days as a three-sport varsity athlete and team captain, to her completion of three New York City marathons while news producing and working in international affairs, fitness has always been the one constant in Laura's life. But it wasn't until she was pregnant with her daughter, Sophia, that she grew determined to turn her love for exercise into a career. Laura is empathetic to all who want to remain fit while juggling multiple responsibilities. Making this her goal, she created her program at The Fit Co. All her workout classes include time-efficient, high-energy and total-body workouts that can be done barefoot.

Q) What is The Fit Co. method? Why is it different than other classes like spin or barre?

A) At The Fit Co, our method is non-stop, total-body workouts with minimal to no equipment needed.  Unlike spin or barre, we target all your muscles in just under 45 minutes, and no equipment ensures the workout can be done anywhere. Our No Sweat class is more focused on toning, whereas our Fusion and Werk It classes incorporate cardio intervals to spike your metabolism and yoga moves.

Q) What is the ideal amount of exercise someone should aim to get in every week to see results?

A) It would depend on what level the individual is starting from. Since fitness is a marathon not a sprint, it is most important for each person to look at his or her own life and be realistic in order to avoid the all-too-familiar on-again, off-again fitness bandwagon. Two to three efficient, total-body workouts a week, which include cardio intervals (the most efficient way to burn calories), is a great start.

Q) Since dieting isn’t ideal, what is a quick routine to get your body back into shape after the holidays?

A) Cardio intervals are the most efficient way to burn calories, keeping your metabolism at a higher rate for hours after exercise. Tabatas (4-minute cardio intervals/ 20 seconds one exercise/10 seconds active recovery/20 seconds of another), where your heart rate is at its max during the 20-second part, are extremely effective.

Q) If someone can’t make it to your classes, what is a good workout they can do on their own at the gym?

A) At The Fit Co, our workouts are designed so that you do not even need to go to a gym! We have an online video program and are in the process of launching live classes that can be done at your own home. We understand the way to work your body (no equipment necessary), so check out our videos, and as soon as we launch our live classes, we will let you know.

HEAD TO TOE GYM LOOK

Those skinny jeans starting to cut off your circulation? You’re in good company.

Consider this your #MotivationMonday. The first step to getting back into a solid fitness regimen is outfitting yourself in cool gear. Since many of us are feeling a bit bloated and torpid from weeks of holiday festivities, our ideal fitness look needs to be as flattering as it is functional. Start with a pair of figure-sculpting leggings, like Nike’s Zoned Sculpt Training Tights, that will keep everything contained. If necessary, consider saving any stomach-baring bra tops or ultra-tight tanks for a little later in the year, and instead, try a relaxed-fit T-shirt. Try LNDR’s printed cotton-jersey logo tee, with its effortless fit and reflective lettering. Throw on a simple gray sweatshirt for a warm intermediate layer. We love this style by Splendid featuring a lace-up back detail. The puffer coat is back big time this season, and it’s the perfect winter topper for the gym. If Balenciaga’s lust-worthy version isn’t in the budget this month, opt for this feather-down quilted anorak by Zara. Finish off the look with a cool gym bag and Adidas’ futuristic Tubular Defiant sneakers.
