NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION: DETOX WITH THE AaHa! RESTART CLEANSE

It's cold outside and let's be honest, we're all hiding a few extra pounds under our (Dress for the Weather-approved) parkas. Even the most health-conscious folks amongst us can get off-track during the holidays. Those extra glasses of wine combined with an abundance of rich foods and desserts can leave us feeling bloated, fatter and just plain blah. That’s why we’ve become devotees of the life-changing AaHa! Restart Cleanse. Created by Alexa Fishback, MS, RD and Hala Si-Ahmed, MPH , this elimination cleanse will help re-set your system, making you feel light, glow-y and all around great…All the while eating nutritious and delicious whole FOODS. Whatever your fitness goals, it’s the perfect way to start off the year (and to get back into your skinny jeans).

Q & A WITH ALEXA AND HALA

What is the AaHa Restart Cleanse? How does it work?

For either 7 or 5 days - AaHa Restart participants form a team and support one another to organize and pre-plan 3 healthy, hearty meals a day consisting of whole foods.  We enjoy plenty of lean protein (fish, chicken, lentils, eggs etc.), fruits, veggies, nuts and seeds.  We use olive oil, lemon, fresh herbs, and spices etc. to make our foods delicious. And we eat naturally gluten free starches such as quinoa, sweet potatoes, and brown rice to tame cravings. We focus on healthy eating -- and in order to do this -- we eliminate potential allergen foods that can cause inflammation in the body when eaten at an excess -- gluten, dairy, caffeine, alcohol, sugar, non-nutritive sweeteners, high fructose corn syrup and highly processed/packaged foods.

Why cleanse at all?

We don't believe that your GI system needs cleansing per se -- instead we want to change your focus from fast, packaged foods to whole foods that are best for your body, metabolize the cleanest, and give you the best energy. We want to help you reduce inflammation inside your bodies so you feel and look better on the outside.  New studies are also showing that not all calories are created equal -- of course we have always known that some calories give us nutrients and others do not (empty calories). But what we have not always known is that calories from healthy foods digest better -- thereby leaving less residue (fat) behind. So eating a low cal option riddled with non-nutritive sweeteners may end up effecting your system and leaving you heavier and bloated simply because it isn't healthy for your body and your body knows that and doesn't want to metabolize it.

Is the AaHa Cleanse a weight-loss program?

AaHa participants inevitably lose weight over the course of the AaHa week and continue to drop pounds if they stick with some of their new-found healthy habits when the week is over.  But you will come away from the week with so much more than just pounds lost.  Participants learn how to pre-plan and cook wholesome meals at home and how to order wisely off of any restaurant menu. You will feel lighter at the end of the week, but you will also feel more energetic, and generally awesome - with glowing skin to boot.  We have found that many people have successfully kick-started weight loss with the AaHa week and use our 5-day express weeks to get them back on track when they veer away from their healthy eating habits.

What distinguishes the AaHa Cleanse from other cleanses out there on the market?

First - AaHa is an eating cleanse -- you will not feel hungry during the week! We are not a juice cleanse or a fast -- we focus on FOOD. Second, AaHa is a team supported nutrition program with leadership and constant communication.  We work together on WhatsApp to answer each other’s questions, field menu options, and just lend support when someone feels overwhelmed.  AaHa is all about support and encouragement, and our clients often tell us that they are sad when the week is over because they love the chat group so much!
