With Valentine’s Day approaching, our minds turn to jewelry. In these freezing temperatures, you need to find pieces that won’t get caught in wool pullovers, stuck in gloves, or fall off when removing your hat. So, we asked Dana Gati Colby, a personal jewelry advisor, for practical and comfortable jewelry that is unique, timeless, and winter-appropriate.

Dana Gati Colby is one of those women blessed with style and the ability to edit down jewelry like nobody else. A seasoned veteran of Cathy Waterman, she consults private clients (including Salvatore Ferragamo) and has worked extensively with stylists, celebrities and public figures. Whether she directs her skills towards helping those looking for one-time help in purchasing a special piece or gift, clientele adding to their personal jewelry collection, or those wanting to refine their current collection, the result is always flawless. Dana has the rare ability to make jewelry work within a client's personal style. And, she happens to be a sweetheart.

Q&A

What pieces and trends are you excited about this season and are actually practical to wear during winter?

Stackable rings are big right now. My personal favorites are from Hoorsenbuhs. These rings are incredibly chic, timeless and versatile enough to wear with both casual and dressed-up looks. I love how stylish they looked piled up on both your ring and index fingers. They look best with mixed metals—so, remember: the more the better! They’re also great gifts because you can start with one and add on with each year or special occasion. And, more importantly, they’re easy to wear with gloves and easy to never take off.

What are your favorite cuff bracelets that you can wear that won’t catch onto sweaters?

I love the idea of stackable bracelets that are easy to throw on—just like a stackable ring.  I’m obsessed with Hoorsenbuhs bangles right now. They are perfect with any outfit and look great mixed with a few metals; wear one rose gold, one yellow gold, and one white gold. They won’t get caught of any outfit and never need to be taken off. Jemma Wynne stacks are also high on my list, but they have colorful stones and diamonds around them, so they can definitely get caught on sweaters!

We noticed that cuff earrings are a trend right now. Which are your favorites? Do they make a good gift?

I think an earring cuff is for a very specific girl—either someone who is a bit more edgy or someone who has everything.  I am loving this one from the French line Repossi. I prefer a simple everyday post earring that is easy to wear with any outfit and will not get caught on scarves or sweaters. I think studs are a foolproof gift to buy; everyone loves a stud.

Which pieces do you recommend for someone looking for that one very special piece?

-Ring: The Cathy Waterman "Love" ring is an incredibly special gift—perfect for Valentine’s Day. It comes in platinum and yellow gold. It molds to your finger and is very comfortable. You never have to take it off. It’s the perfect middle or index finger ring.

-Watch: I have always loved the Hermes Cape Cod watch. It is very classic and preppy at the same time. I love that you can easily switch the leather bands for different moods or different seasons. The taupe or black colors are great for the winter, and the orange is perfect for spring and summer. This watch can also have a double or single leather strap—very versatile! For a major splurge, there is nothing more feminine and beautiful than a rose gold and stainless steel Rolex. The mixture of metal is great for those who like to always match their jewelry with the watch. It will look perfect with a stack of mixed metal Hoorsenbuhs rings! There are so many beautiful vintage Rolex watches out there—you just need an eye to hunt for them!

-Necklace: The clean lines of this Jennifer Meyer's turquoise & diamond bar necklace is so easy to wear and so great to layer with other necklaces. This necklace comes in a few colors: like turquoise and lapis. I love the way it lays on the neck and instandly adds a pop of color to any outfit.

-Earring: The color combination in Irene Neuwirth’s mint chrysoprase and sugilite drop earrings is stunning. A pear drop earring is so flattering and can be worn super fancy or even with jeans to dinner. The darker and lighter colors make it great for winter and summer alike.
