HEAD TO TOE WORK LOOK

This never-ending cold spell has truly been the “winter of our discontent.”

Though this week’s temperatures are more moderate, we’re still far from donning our spring clothing. Yet the thought of wearing wintery black, gray and navy for another day is enough to push us over the edge. It’s time to spice up your wardrobe with a dash of color. The painterly print of this asymmetric skirt by Zara feels fresh and spring-y, yet is totally wearable right now with tights or, if you’re brave enough, bare legs. Since the skirt commands attention, wear an uncomplicated top like this simple, bright-colored crewneck sweater. A jacket in an unexpected color adds a sophisticated touch. We love the detachable fur collar on this version by Vanessa Bruno. Ankle boots add edge and keep with the artsy vibe of the look. Later when it's warmer, try a pair of mesh heels. Top it off with a chic, oversized chain link necklace.

HEAD TO TOE CASUAL DAY

This week’s forecast shows more of the same temps in the 40s/30s. So add something fresh to your look and buy a skirt-and-blouse combo.

By now you've all witnessed the phenomenon of pattern mixing. This year, designers are showing separates with the same pattern worn together. While the idea of being matchy-matchy may seem odd to you, we think it’s fun and flattering. The key is ensuring you choose the right prints, like this polka-dotted silk blouse  and skirt from Otte boutique's eponymous line. The graphic cream and black pattern and grown-up silhouettes prevent you from looking too cutesy. You’ll wear this outfit to death come April. This week, however, pair the blouse with light blue wash jeans (another big trend for the upcoming season). You can layer with a cashmere sweater and an oversized boyfriend coat to keep the look from being too precious. Finish the look off with booties or high-top sneakers for an effortlessly cool, urban style.
