WHERE TO BUY

Jenna Gottlieb, Senior Fashion Writer, Lucky Magazine

Jenna Gottlieb writes fashion and feature stories for Lucky Magazine, and has an absolute blast exploring the country as the magazine's designated city guide editor. She lives in NYC, but does her best shopping—and people watching—on the road. We asked Jenna to put together two looks for this week’s weather and found out the one piece she’s dying to add to her spring wardrobe.

IF YOU COULD ONLY BUY JUST ONE PIECE

To me, summer is all about a white, light-but-crisp, French girl-ish dress—and this lace-detailed one from Band of Outsiders is completely perfect. I’d wear it during the day with everything from flat leather sandals to canvas low tops, and at night with wedges or edgy, lace-up black heels.

HEAD TO TOE CASUAL LOOK

It’s cold. In mid-May. Blech.

But on the upside, the dreary, in-between(ish) weather means extra days for lots of layering—and I love layering. Especially when it involves combing sleek, super-slim pieces (liquid-y leather leggings) and comfy, tomboy-ish ones (a striped knit, a menswear-ish oxford shirt buttoned all the way to the top). And, as I’m not a huge fan of wellies, which can be a bit cumbersome and figure-swallowing, I substitute with sneakers, which make for graceful puddle-jumping and mad dashes down subway steps (plus, Chucks look radder the more roughed-up they get, so don’t be afraid to get them splashed!). Top everything off with a fitted trench, which is always crazy flattering and so, so chic; and a cherry-red duffle, for the perfect playful hit of color.

HEAD TO TOE GOING OUT

A festive night out is a great excuse to wear something a bit daring and unexpected. (You’ll only be in it for a couple of hours, after all.)

Since this week’s weather still necessitates a jacket, there’s a bit more room to play with color and texture. I love the awesomely irreverent uptown/downtown look of an extra-loud, scarf-print pencil skirt topped with a drapy, tucked-in white tee and boxy metallic-embellished varsity jacket (with the sleeves scrunched up, of course!). A pair of open-toe, stiletto booties adds a feminine, party-ready edge, while a hand-painted bag in eye-catching black and turquoise provides a punch of downtown chic.
