Our hearts go out to all our friends, family, fellow New Yorkers and residents of the tri-state region who have been impacted by the devastating effects of Sandy. As things slowly start to return to normal in the wake of the storm, don’t forget the many still in need of aid. To learn how to help with the recovery efforts through volunteering, visit nyredcross.org  or NYC.gov.org.

To donate funds, visit redcross.org or aidmatrixnetwork.org. In the meantime, here are a couple of casual looks for this week’s weather to help brighten your day during this dark, tumultuous time.

HEAD TO TOE CASUAL LOOK

Balance warm layers up top with a sliver of bare leg for a cool, weather appropriate look.

With chilly fall temperatures in the forecast this week, it’s the perfect time to pull out your mid-weight fall coat from the closet. We love the mixture of textures and colors on this paneled parka by ASOS. The army green silhouette is a bit tough and utilitarian, but the Jacquard patches add refinement. Pair with a simple quilted sweater or sweatshirt, and a leather mini skirt for an unexpected contrast. Sturdy lace-up booties are substantial enough to balance the parka, but delicate enough not to overwhelm. Woolen, over-the-knee socks add an adorable yet sexy edge by revealing a peak of skin. If you’re feeling more modest, try a pair of simple black or gray tights (we love Wolford for their durability). Top it off with a knitted beanie and oversized tote bag to achieve the full “urban warrior” effect.

HEAD TO TOE DENIM TUX

Head-to-toe denim can look surprisingly chic when properly accessorized.

The idea of a “denim tuxedo” used to be a fashion no-no. But, combining denim separates in the right washes and proportions can actually look incredibly chic and slimming. Start with a denim or chambray button-down shirt. We love this multi-hued version with patchwork pockets by J Brand. Or try this similar yet less pricey style by ASOS. Pair with your favorite skinny blue or black jeans, or try a pair with contrast color-knee patches like these by Maison Scotch. Layer a navy, tailored wool coat over the all-denim outfit—combining navy with denim looks sophisticated and classic. Plus, the appliqued sleeves of this Zara coat add visual interest to the otherwise all-blue ensemble. Finish it off with a pair of sleek blue ankle boots with a monk-strap closure like this two-tone pair by 3.1 Phillip Lim. Throw in a clutch emblazoned with a message to the world: Faith. Stand strong, NYC!
