HEAD TO TOE TRICK OR TREAT

Moody hues, gothic flourishes and fun accessories—that’s the Halloween spirit.

With creepy clowns terrorizing communities and an even creepier presidential election playing out on the national stage, we feel like we’ve been living in a Twilight Zone episode. So, if you don’t feel like going whole hog with your costume this year, we totally get it. But in the interest of fun (and for the sake of the kids), we’ve got to get it together and show some Halloween spirit. Minus the campy accessories, we’d wear this Halloween look on a regular basis. Start with a pair of velvet pants in a burgundy hue, like Rag & Bone/Jean’s skinny velour style. Pair with a streamlined black top, such as Equipment’s sleeveless turtleneck. Add a touch of gothic Victoriana with a dramatic hooded velvet cape. If Saint Laurent’s exquisite version isn’t in your budget this year, we found this gem on Amazon. Playful accessories make the look. Try some witch-like black arm warmers, berry-colored fishnet ankle socks and either a glittery mask or an embellished headband. Now’s also the time to sport those deep-berry lip shades and nails. We love Deborah Lippmann’s nail lacquer in Miss Independent and Nars’ new Velvet Lip Glide in Rich Berry. Top off the look with Garnier’s Color Styler Wash-Out Hair Color in blue or purple.

HEAD TO TOE TRICK OR TREAT

According to our elementary school spies, bad guys and tough girls rule this year. Expect to see lots of Stars Wars characters, from Stormtroopers to Darth Vader (probably because kids love those Lightsabers, which conveniently double as glow sticks). Of course, you could opt for something simpler like a Batman or Superman tee with a cape. For her, think badass women like Maleficent, complete with a horn headband, or Rey, Star Wars’ newest heroine. Throw on a pair of cool black boots or these with glitter to match. Even girly girls can get in on the evil theme with a wicked princess dress. For those looking to keep things easy, opt for a Day of the Dead veil or a cute monster hat. A custom batgirl cape is pretty rad, too. And for those that want to be able to keep an eye on the little ones as they trick or treat, try sticker reflective strips on their costumes.

IF YOU COULD ONLY BUY JUST ONE PIECE

While at first we were on the fence, we are now hankering to get our name (or kids’ names) embroidered onto our denim and bomber jackets. We love how the denim jackets and bombers look over a chucky knit sweater for fall. Here, we’ve rounded out some of our favorite resources.

Odessa Rae: They can customize your name, initials, city, etc., onto any of their vintage denim jackets. When ordering your jacket, input customization requests at checkout, including name embroidered, placement of the word, and which patches you'd like on your jacket.

Online at shoppdessarae.com.

Danielle Guizio: This brand’s customized bomber jackets are just plain rad and on trend. We love the cool script and how it looks on the back or front of these bombers.

Online at danielleguiziony.com.

Madewell: Select from any denim style (shirts, jackets or jeans) and have something monogrammed directly onto it. You can do it in stores or go online to purchase your choice and call 866-544-1937 to place an order over the phone.
