WHERE TO BUY

ALEXANDER WANG Nappa leather over-the-knee boot, net-a-porter.com

Over the past few weeks we asked our friends, family, Facebook fans and Twitter followers to submit their fall fashion questions. It was difficult to choose from the wealth of amazing inquiries we received, but we selected three of the most commonly asked questions for this edition. We hope to continue including reader questions into our editorial, and we encourage you to submit your inquires to us at edit@dressfortheweather.com. Cheers!

QUESTION 1

Are high boots tucked into jeans still cool?

Yes, this look has become a true classic and isn’t going anywhere soon (If you’re referring to Uggs, please by all means “just say no.”). The key to pulling off this style is to keep your silhouette sleek with skinny trousers, jeans or sometimes even leggings. To keep the look up-to-date, try leather over-the-knee heeled boots or a shiny, flat equestrian-inspired pair. Pair with an exaggeratedly oversized, bright-colored solid or patterned sweater. Don’t forget jet-black skinny jeans, pants or leather leggings to finish off the casual-sexy vibe. A structured shoulder bag is the perfect accessory.

QUESTION 2

I love my brightly colored jeans but I always feel they look best when worn with shoes that show my ankles. Do I have to put them away for the fall and winter? How do I winterize this look?

If the jeans in question are fluorescent-hued, sorry, it’s time to retire them for the season. Neon shades don’t really translate well with the rich color palette of fall. Primary color jeans in red or cobalt blue, however, transition well into the cold-weather wardrobe. Try pairing your bright jeans with a neutral-colored, textured tweed jacket like this style by Étoile Isabel Marant, to add a touch of sophistication. Or, try this more wallet-friendly Topshop version that’s equally as impactful. A lightweight knit sweater or long-sleeved tee is the perfect piece to layer underneath. We love all the cheeky message knits like this version by ASOS that are so popular right now. We agree that ankle length jeans are flattering. Add a pair of low-cut ankle boots, if you want to show off a sliver of skin while maintaining a degree of warmth. Or, try a pair of ankle-length, studded motorcycle boots on chillier days when you need more coverage. You won’t be flashing any bare ankle, but nonetheless the look of skinny jeans tucked into motorcycle boots is adorable.

QUESTION 3

How to wear flats in the cold weather—e.g. if it's a bit nippy and flats expose your foot too much. Are there socks you could wear or do you just go straight to boots?

On a recent trip to Paris, we noticed all these stylish women were wearing their loafers or oxfords despite the chilly weather outside. So we asked a buyer at a very chic boutique the secret. Her answer was simple: no-show socks. But the trick is taking the time to ensure that the no-show socks (aka Peds) complement the cut of your shoe so you don’t really see the sock. Here are some picks for the colder weather to try: SmartWool Women’s Secret Sleuth designed to keep the unexposed parts of feet warm, we’ve heard about these Keysocks designed to keep the unexposed parts of feet warm, Barneys New York No Show Socks; or just wear a regular version by Hue. Our suggestion is to take advantage of the milder weather and wear flat-styled shoes as long as possible because once the weather turns cold, you’ll be relegated to boots! Trade in your ballet flats for some oxfords or loafers.
